Too early for this but I've thought of it before and wanted to put it out there in case I missed something somewhere.

If the Narada hadn't come, and if Jim was on schedule to graduate from SFA in three years (like he promised Pike at the shuttle), he would have graduated before Bones, right?

I just always assumed that, doctor or no, Bones would have had to go through the same SFA training the other cadets did and, if so, the thought of Jim leaving him behind makes me a sad panda.
